The organization was founded in 2006 in response to an individual who was homeless who died because of the cold weather. Local churches pooled their money together to purchase hotel vouchers for people in the winter so they could avoid the bitter cold. This was the beginning of Aurora Warms the Night.
In the past 13 years Aurora Warms the Night has provided hotel vouchers for people experiencing homelessness with the assistance of the City of Aurora and other local organizations. We currently provide shelter services for inclement weather and COVID-related needs. In addition, our organization provides meals, basic needs items, and appropriate clothing our clients may require.
Beyond our temporary sheltering program, we provide food and hygiene kits to people living on the streets, as well as blankets, socks, underwear, and cold weather items such as coats, hats, and gloves.
Last year we added a six-unit mobile shower trailer with a full-service shower and restroom. During these two-hour outings, we provide a meal and hygiene items, new socks, and underwear, as well as blankets and other appropriate cold-weather necessities.
Our team provides much needed case-management as an additional service to all of our clients. This includes general assistance filling out applications for Medicaid, Housing applications, and numerous other assistance programs. We are tasked with helping people we encounter with any service they may need. Through dialogue and case management, we are better able to track, follow up with, and assist the individuals we work with.
In September of 2018, the organization went through a major change with the resignation of the Executive Director and change of Fiscal Agent from Aurora Mental Health to becoming completely independent. In the last several months the entire organization has been through a re-organization to increase capacity and build internal systems to serve the community in the best way possible. We continue to be passionate about serving people who are experiencing homelessness as well as educating the community and encouraging people to assist with our mission to serve those who are among the most vulnerable.
We operate primarily in the Colfax Corridor in North Aurora. We also relocated in June of 2020 to our own storefront on 9360 East Colfax Avenue in order to better serve our population.
